The month of October is more than just “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” or Oktoberfest. In Chapel Hill, and around the Triangle, October is packed with festivals, fairs, and plenty of on campus activities. If you haven’t been keeping up with self-care, the next few weeks would be a good time to start. In this post I’ll be highlighting events with the most hype, and some that I think are either a must-see or a must-do…
Campout! Carolina (7th-9th) – This annual statewide event encourages individuals, families, friends, scouts, guides and community groups of all kinds to show support for North Carolina’s environment by camping out Friday through Sunday.
Late Night with Roy (14th) – If you’re a HUGE college basketball fan, as many Carolina students are, you definitely will not want to miss this event. This will be your first chance to see the 2011-2012 men and women’s basketball teams in action at the Dean Dome. The even is FREE and usually there are some FREE GOODIES for getting there early. If you’re looking for some good laughs, entertaining basketball, and something to do on a Friday night. You should check this one out!
2011 N.C. State Fair (13-23rd) – If there’s one thing people know about October in the Triangle, it’s that this is the time to go wild on fried foods and wild rides. The annual State Fair is held in Raleigh, and has everything from demolition derby shows to agricultural exhibits. Last year the highlight was the Krispy Kreme Bacon Cheese Burger (see picture below). This year, who knows? But trust me, after all the reading and writing for classes… a nice fried snickers bar and some homemade root beer will have you feeling all too good… until the next morning. That’s when running becomes your self care 🙂
Carolina Homecoming (28th-29th) –Join in on the annual Bell Tower Tailgate before Saturdays football game against Wake Forest. And after the W, celebrate at the post-game party at The Carolina Inn.
AKD (Aaj Ka Dhamaka) 29th – The annual intercollegiate dance competition showcases South Asian dancing, and all proceeds benefit the Mahatma Ghandi Fellowship. This is one of Carolina’s largest and most attended student run events. If you need more info check out the website: http://www.uncakd.com/
I’ve been hearing rumors that Carolina’s own Anoop Desai will be the performer this year.
Halloween on Franklin Street – This annual event is a hallmark of any fall semester at UNC. If you’re a student in the area, you must join the 30,000 + other costumed patrons on Franklin street to celebrate Halloween.
